Why count words before publishing
Almost every format on the web imposes a limit. A title tag truncates around 60 characters in Google, a meta description around 155, a LinkedIn post loses readers past 1,300. Writing first and discovering the cut afterwards means writing twice.
The character count without spaces matters mostly for billing: professional translation and copywriting are often priced per 1,500-character unit, spaces excluded. That is why both figures are given separately.
How reading time is estimated
Silent reading for an adult sits around 200 words per minute on ordinary prose, reading aloud around 130. These are averages: dense technical writing reads slower, narrative faster.
The estimate is therefore useful to calibrate a blog post or time a presentation, not to clock a speech word for word. If you are preparing a talk, read it aloud once: your real pace beats any average.
Your text never leaves your browser
The counting runs in JavaScript, on your device. No text is sent to a server, nothing is stored, nothing is logged. You can disconnect after the page loads and the counter keeps working.
That matters if you are pasting a confidential draft, a contract or unpublished writing. Many online counters send the content to a server to process it.
Common questions
Does the counter work offline?
Yes, once the page has loaded. All the counting is done by your browser, with no network request.
How are hyphenated words counted?
A word is a run of characters separated by spaces. So “well-known” counts as one word, and so does “don't”. This is the convention used by most word processors.
Why does my count differ from Word?
Software treats standalone numbers, footnotes and lone punctuation differently. A one or two percent gap is normal; beyond that, check line breaks and non-breaking spaces.
Is there a size limit?
No imposed limit. In practice a text of several hundred thousand words may slow the display down, since it recounts on every keystroke.
A counter will not tell you whether your text can be found.
Word count does not determine your search visibility. What does is whether your pages are indexed, rendered and structured correctly — the technical layer nobody checks.
